What is KNX, in plain English?

KNX is a shared language for buildings. It’s an open, international standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3 and EN 50090) that lets lighting, heating, blinds, security, energy meters and controls from different manufacturers talk to each other over one network. You get one joined-up building instead of a drawer full of apps.

Is KNX a brand or a product?

Neither. KNX is a communication protocol, like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. More than 500 manufacturers make products certified to speak it, and the standard itself is looked after by KNX Association rather than any one company. That’s why a switch from one maker can control a dimmer from another.

Who owns KNX? Could it disappear?

No single company owns it. KNX is published as international and European standards and maintained by KNX Association in Brussels, with hundreds of member manufacturers. Its roots go back to the European Installation Bus (EIB) of the early 1990s, and devices from those days still work on KNX systems today. It isn’t going anywhere.

Does KNX need Wi-Fi or the internet to work?

Accepted Answer

No. KNX runs on its own dedicated network, usually a low-voltage green bus cable. Your lights, heating and blinds keep working if the broadband drops or a cloud service shuts down. The internet only comes into it if you want remote access or links to things like voice assistants.

Is KNX wired or wireless?

Accepted Answer

Mostly wired, which is why it’s so dependable. The usual version runs on twisted-pair cable (TP). KNX IP carries it over Ethernet for fast backbones and app connections, and KNX RF is wireless for retrofit spots where a cable can’t reach. They can all be mixed in one system.

Is KNX secure?

Accepted Answer

It can be very secure. KNX Secure adds encryption and authentication, both on the bus (KNX Data Secure) and over IP (KNX IP Secure). Combined with a properly designed network, it’s suitable for homes and commercial sites where security really matters.

Question 7

Isn’t KNX only for big houses and offices?

Accepted Answer

Not at all. KNX scales from a one-bed flat to an airport using the same standard. In a home it makes most sense when you’re building, extending or rewiring, because that’s when the cable goes in easily. You can start with lighting and heating and add more later.

Can KNX be added to my existing home?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. A rewire or major renovation is the ideal moment. Where walls can’t be opened up, KNX RF wireless devices and careful planning can bring KNX to parts of a house without starting again. We’ll look at the property and tell you honestly what’s sensible.

How much does KNX cost?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the size of the building and what you want it to do. KNX costs more up front than plug-in smart gadgets, but much less than people expect when it’s planned at first fix, and it’s built to last decades rather than a few years. We give you a clear, itemised proposal so you can decide what’s worth it.

Will I still have normal light switches?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and probably nicer ones. KNX keypads come in hundreds of designs from many manufacturers, from classic rockers to glass touch panels. You can add touchscreens, an app, voice control and automatic sensors too, but the switch on the wall always works.

Can KNX work with Control4, Loxone or Apple Home?

Yes. KNX makes a brilliant backbone for other systems to sit on. We’re registered Control4 and Loxone partners as well, so we can connect KNX to either, and link it to apps and voice assistants through the right gateways.

What happens if my installer goes out of business?

Accepted Answer

With KNX you’re not stuck. Every certified KNX professional uses the same software, ETS, so another certified installer can pick the system up, especially if the ETS project file has been kept safe. We take on systems installed by others all the time.

Do you work with architects, consultants and other electricians?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it’s a big part of what we do. We help architects and designers choose keypads and lighting scenes, support consultants with topology and specifications, and provide ETS design, programming and commissioning for electrical contractors wiring the job.

What is ETS?

Accepted Answer

ETS (Engineering Tool Software) is the manufacturer-independent software from KNX Association used to design, programme and commission every certified KNX device. One tool for every brand is a big part of why KNX projects stay open and maintainable.

Can KNX integrate with BMS, DALI, HVAC and AV?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Gateways connect KNX to DALI lighting, BACnet and Modbus building management systems, HVAC units, AV and audio, CCTV and access control. We design those links so everything behaves as one building.

Can you take over or fix an existing KNX installation?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We review what’s installed, recover or rebuild the ETS project where possible, fix faults and devices that have dropped off the bus, and bring the system up to date, including KNX Secure where it makes sense.
